The brawl ensued after a dispute over a dockside parking spot at Riverfront Park. The Harriott II Riverboat, carrying 227 passengers, attempted to dock in its reserved spot but found a private pontoon boat occupying it. Despite multiple attempts by the riverboat's captain to reach out to the pontoon's operators, their requests were met with rude gestures and verbal abuses.[1]
The co-captain of the Harriott II, Damien Pickett, was transported to the dock to negotiate with the private boat operators. Instead of a peaceful resolution, the situation quickly escalated. Pickett was confronted aggressively and later assaulted by multiple members of the private boat, including Chase Shipman and Leigh Chappell of Selma, Alabama. When fellow Harriott II crew members intervened in Pickett's defense, the brawl expanded, with various individuals becoming involved.
